8:45 Plenary Session

Elon Musk, President, Space Exploration Technologies (Space X)
Alex Tai, Chief Operating Officer, Virgin Galactic
George French, President, and Chuck Lauer, Vice President of Business Development, Rocketplane Kistler
Valin Thorn, Deputy Program Manager Commercial Crew & Cargo Program, NASA

Adventure seekers can find the risk of starting a new business as thrilling as those who seek to experience sub-orbital spaceflight. Adventure seeking, risk-taking entrepreneurs are driving the new space race, but government partnerships are critical to the success of the emerging commercial spaceflight industry. This session features the two commercial space companies NASA selected to compete to design, build, and demonstrate operation of a commercial replacement for the Space Shuttle, which retires in 2010 vehicles to shuttle cargo and eventually humans to the International Space Station. Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) and Rocketplane Kistler are competing companies with different designs and approaches. Both companies were chosen by NASA to demonstrate new commercial space transportation systems in the $500 million Commercial Orbital Transportation Services (COTS) program. As of press time it is uncertain if both companies in particular Rocketplane Kistler will be eligible to receive NASA COTS funding. Eventually, NASA will conduct a competition to select at least one commercial space transportation company to provide logisitics services for the International Space Station. Virgin Galactic will address a completely different perspective in the business of space commercialization, its suborbital spaceliner business at New Mexico's Spaceport America, being developed north of Las Cruces.

10:15 Track 1 - Session 1 Progress in Vehicle Systems
Chair: Thomas Burton, Department Head, Mechanical Engineering and Aerospace Engineering, New Mexico State University

Panelist:
Hiroyuki Ogawa, Professor, Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, JAXA
Hugues Laporte-Weywada, Senior Vice President and Technical Director, EADS Astrium
Mark Sirangelo, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, SpaceDev
George Sowers, Vice President for Advanced Programs, United Launch Alliance

This panel will consist of entrepreneurs who are continuing the development of launch and space vehicle systems for personal and/or commercial spaceflight. These entrepreneurs are privately financed, and their basic approach is to design new vehicle systems using mostly existing technology. The goal is safe and inexpensive suborbital flight systems for the personal and commercial space flight industries, for example, to enable routine flights of the general public to and from and through space. A roadmap for this industry might include suborbital flights from single spaceports, progressing to suborbital flights between nearby spaceports and finally to orbital flights and flights between spaceport pairs located around the world. Innovative system designs utilizing both horizontal and vertical launch systems are currently under development. Since the X PRIZE was awarded in 2004 there have been significant advances in this community of space pioneers. An interesting aspect is the partnerships that have developed between the entrepreneurs and other, larger companies and agencies. Each panelist will summarize the significant achievements and milestones accomplished by their groups during the past year, as well as key plans and challenges for the future. There will be a limited amount of time for questions from the audience.

As tourism converts what we have imagined to what we experience, people can make trips to space now. Who are these people who travel to space? Because of the cost, only a few space enthusiastic individuals were able to experience space. Growing interests and efforts from private entrepreneurs and space enthusiasts have opened space windows that have become a part of tourism and a realistic area for businesses today. We see ordinary members of public buying tickets to travel to space and back to earth safely. Beyond traveling to space, people will be able to spend nights doing space activities. Why do we travel to space? Each panelist, from astronaut to space travelers (past and future), will share their own experiences and challenges. They will discuss the feasibility of space travel, motivating and discouraging factors, possible timelines for affordable tickets, activities in space, and up coming projects.

As this panel is equally divided among those having been to space and those wanting to go to space, this panel will merge the two groups space flight participants. For those having been to space, we will solicit their expectations versus their reality experience, their recommendation for training for civilians going to space, and their top four or five priority recommendations for those planning their trip. Those panel members not having been to space will be asked for their expectations for the training and the trip, and what if any of the priority recommendations from the space experienced panel members would they accept and reject. This panel discussion blend the experienced with the soon to be experienced to present people with a realistic view of space travel expectations and experiences.
